DOD, Army websites scrub articles on Navajo Code Talkers. Here’s how that may change

The Department of Defense and U.S. Army scrubbed articles on the Navajo Code Talkers and their contribution to America’s victories during World War II, removing the information from websites as part of President Donald Trump’s campaign against diversity, equity and inclusion.

But on Tuesday, in the wake of news stories about the removal, Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren said he was assured the Code Talkers information would be restored. Defense officials told him the material was taken down as part of an automated review of content.

In a letter to the Defense Department, Nygren said the Code Talkers were “profoundly significant” to the Navajo Nation and made indispensable contributions to U.S. military efforts during WWII.
