In the spirit of the Tuskegee Airmen, whose courage and discipline broke barriers in the skies, we celebrate a modern pioneer who has spent his career breaking barriers in the world of technology and imagination. This Black History Month, the Tuskegee Airmen Scholarship Foundation (TASF) is proud to spotlight Lanny Smoot, a man whose journey from a curious child in Brooklyn to a legendary Disney Imagineer serves as a beacon of inspiration for the next generation of STEM leaders.
A Legacy of “Firsts”
Lanny Smoot is not just an inventor; he is a visionary whose work has shaped how we communicate and how we dream. With over 100 patents to his name, Smoot is the most prolific inventor in the history of The Walt Disney Company. In 2024, he achieved a milestone that places him in the highest echelon of American ingenuity: he became only the second person from Disney to be inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame, following in the footsteps of Walt Disney himself.
Reflecting on the drive to innovate and the desire for representation, Smoot shares:
“I would love to see a world that exposes more life choices to all people so that their natural talents can bloom. We are what we can see, right? If we can see someone else do something, it can light a fire in us to do it.”
Engineering the Future
Smoot’s brilliance is etched into the fabric of our daily lives and our most cherished entertainment experiences. While his accomplishments are vast, three of his most notable patented contributions stand out:
- The Realistic Lightsaber: Smoot and his team patented the first realistic, extendable, and retractable lightsaber. This invention brought a piece of cinematic history into the physical world, allowing fans to experience the “magic” of Star Wars in a way never before possible.
- Video-on-Demand Technology: Long before the era of streaming services, Smoot worked at Bell Labs to develop early video-on-demand systems. His work laid the foundation for the digital world we live in today, where any story is available at the touch of a button.
- The HoloTile Floor: One of his most recent and groundbreaking inventions, the HoloTile floor is the world’s first multi-person, omnidirectional, modular treadmill floor. It allows users to walk in any direction through virtual environments without ever moving off the tiles, a true “Holodeck” experience come to life.
Lighting the Spark
Lanny’s journey began with a simple spark. He often recalls his father bringing home a battery, a bell, and a lightbulb, and showing him how to wire them together. “That light lit up my career,” he often says.
Just as the Tuskegee Airmen proved that excellence knows no color, Lanny Smoot has spent decades mentoring diverse young people, encouraging them to pursue careers in STEM. He understands that the key to progress is providing a path for those who follow. As he advises the next generation:
“If you want something that doesn’t exist in this world yet, think of what it would be like to have it, and then think about how you could cause it to happen… Be brave. Be courageous.”
Join Us in Empowering the Next Visionary
The Tuskegee Airmen Scholarship Foundation exists to ensure that the “Lanny Smoots” of tomorrow, brilliant students with the curiosity to invent but without the resources to attend college, have the support they need to succeed.
Your support makes the difference. By supporting TASF, you are providing scholarships to deserving students who will go on to design the aircraft of the future, cure diseases, and invent technologies we haven’t yet imagined.
